At John Marshall, Ms. Ward’s mindfulness group has become more than a space to pause — it’s a space where students are learning how caring for themselves can ripple outward and strengthen an entire school community.
Through intentional moments of reflection, grounding, and connection, students are encouraged to be present with themselves first. What has emerged is something powerful: confidence, leadership, and a deeper understanding that self-care isn’t selfish — it’s essential.
One student, in particular, has taken that lesson to heart. She shows up not only for herself, but for her peers. She wants representation to look different. She wants stigma to fade. She wants others — especially younger students — to see what success can look like here. By choosing presence and belief, she motivates those around her to do the same.
Her leadership reminds us of something we see every day at CIS: when students feel supported and believed in, they begin to pour into one another. They empower their classmates. They change the culture of their school from the inside out.
Mindfulness helps students navigate challenges, build resilience, and find light even in difficult moments. There is goodness that grows out of darkness — and when young people are given the tools to care for themselves, they are better able to care for their communities.
This is the impact of CIS at John Marshall. Students strengthening themselves so they can strengthen their ecosystem. Belief turning into action. And young leaders showing us that taking care of ourselves is one of the most powerful ways we can take care of everyone.
